About

Who We Are

Ram’s Head Theatrical Society is Stanford University’s oldest and largest theatrical organization. We exist to make ambitious theater—and to make it entirely ourselves.

On September 13, 1911, seven students and three faculty members gathered to form a drama society. On the wall hung the stuffed head of a ram—and a name was born. Two months later, during Big Game week, the first Gaieties was performed, launching what would become one of Stanford’s most enduring traditions.

Every aspect of every production—from direction and choreography to set construction and lighting design—is conceived and executed by students. Over 120 students participate each year, and our productions draw more than 6,000 audience members across three annual shows. Fewer than 5% of members are theater majors—the rest are engineers, pre-meds, CS students, and everything in between. The audition motto captures the philosophy: “Enthusiasm, not talent!”

Three Shows, One Mission

Big Game Gaieties

Fall

An entirely original, student-written musical performed during Big Game week. Certain elements are almost always included: a Cal villain, a Stanford victory, a love story, and a cameo by the president. Running since 1911.

Winter Show

Winter

A collaborative new work emphasizing artistic and technical innovation. Performed in intimate venues like Nitery or Pigott Theater.

Spring Musical

Spring

A licensed Broadway musical in Memorial Auditorium—Stanford’s 1,705-seat performance hall, built in 1937 with help from Ram’s Head technicians.

To consistently foster quality artistic, learning, and community experiences while creating theater that meets community needs and promotes the creation of original theatrical works.

Ram’s Head Constitution

Ram’s Head also performs in Pigott Theater, Nitery, and Prosser Studio for more intimate work. A Chorus Line (2023) was staged in Roble Gym’s Dance Studio, turning the venue itself into part of the performance.
