Ram's Head's gender-bent 'Heathers' pushes the boundaries of digital theater.

About the Production

When COVID shut down live theater, Ram's Head didn't stop. Heathers was performed virtually, with students singing from separate dorm rooms and childhood bedrooms while audiences watched on laptop screens. The production featured a groundbreaking gender-bent reimagining — the first official queer version of Heathers, with JD reimagined as "Janie Dean" in a same-sex love story with Veronica. Directors Diana Khong '22 and Gwen Phagnasay Le '22 worked directly with the original writers to create this version, which is now officially licensed for other productions worldwide. Emily Saletan '24, who played the first female J.D., told the Stanford Daily: "It feels like there's more purpose" — on how gender-bent casting brings "an entirely new queer narrative and meaning to the musical."
